11 Insider Insights Every Small Business Owner Should Know

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there are over 33 million small businesses in America, representing 99.9% of all U.S. businesses. Yet despite their economic impact, small business owners often navigate growth in isolation, facing challenges they assume are theirs alone.

This month, The Lenserf Group hosted a small business workshop in Henderson, Nevada, bringing together leaders to plan, reflect, and build momentum for 2026. What emerged from the room was a series of shared truths that resonated across the board.

The Real Challenges Small Business Leaders Face

1. Identity Shifts

Business transitions, whether scaling up, pivoting services, or recovering from setbacks, can shake a leader’s sense of self. “Who am I now?” becomes as important a question as “What’s my strategy?” Reclaiming your identity as a leader is often the first step toward meaningful forward movement.

2. Resource Constraints

Financial limitations, operational challenges, or personal bandwidth issues are catalysts. When resources are tight, innovation can emerge. The most innovative business strategies frequently come from asking, “What can we do with what we have right now?”

3. Fear

“Can I actually do this?” It’s the question that keeps business owners up at night yet rarely gets spoken aloud. Workshop participants discovered that naming fear openly, whether it’s fear of failure, visibility, or scaling, creates permission for everyone to move through it together.

4. Technology

Social media and AI tools promise efficiency and reach, but many business owners feel stuck between wanting to leverage them and not knowing where to start. Leaders need practical, actionable steps to be able to implement consistently.

5. Adaptability

The ability to pivot is essential. Small business owners who build adaptability into their leadership approach position themselves to respond to market shifts, customer needs, and unexpected challenges with confidence.

6. Instinct

Several in the room noted that they experienced internal nudges. Through the discussions they realized that those nudges pointing toward decisions, matter and are pointing toward the next right step.

7. Community

Community is about having people who understand your challenges, celebrate your wins, and hold you accountable to your goals. It was clear that participants moved faster, thought bigger, and planned more strategically when they worked together. By the end, many of them felt the need to ignite more community.

“Some participants spoke their goals out loud for the first time,” says Farnia Fresnel, President of The Lenserf Group. “They realized their challenges were shared. When you highlight what’s needed, the right partners help ignite what comes next.”

8. Boundaries

Protecting time and attention is strategic. Business owners who establish clear boundaries around their energy and focus create capacity. Many decided to say “no” to what appeared to be opportunity, to create space to say “yes” to priorities.

9. U-Turns

It’s okay to be wrong. As we delved deeper into the discussions we heard about many u-turns or misaligned intentions. The work was to identify the lessons from pivots, failed experiments, and course corrections. We found them to contain insights that prepared the leaders for their next year. Businesses can thrive if they extract wisdom from their mistakes.

10. Progress

Many small business owners spend an inordinate amount of time on tactical matters and often underestimate their progress and impact. Between managing operations, serving customers, leading teams, and staying current with industry changes, they are accomplishing more, and gaining efficiencies. Yet, they are not celebrating that progress. Don’t forget to celebrate small wins!

11. The Formula

When small business leaders have the right capacity (time, energy, resources), access to community (peers, mentors, partners), and a dose of clarity (strategic direction, priorities), momentum naturally follows. This is what we witnessed as participants left the workshop with renewed energy and concrete next steps. Capacity + Community + Clarity = Momentum
